My parents are thinking of getting a Subaru Outback, most likely with the 3.6L flat six. They only come with a CVT. Have any Opponauts driven one? I know that CVTs are generally evil. How bad is the Subaru's?

Here's a Mustang for your time.

Not too bad, if we're being honest. It's rev to about 4k then stop until it drops down to cruising RPM. It's typically pretty smooth. Really good on the highway, knowing you're in NY, it does well on the Thruway. It's not amazing, but I don't have any really bad feelings towards it.

The 3.6 is fun, and the only thing about the CVT is it's weird when it reaches a certain RPM and parks there while you continue to accelerate. It's not bad, just odd.

Subaru is good, CVT is bad.

Have one on my wife's 2012 Impreza. It works. It's a chain. Kind of rubber bandy but it feels solid. I don't think it requires service. When rev'd high you hear the transmission more than the engine. It's not bad..

Subaru's new CVTs are the best in the industry. I had the 2.5 as a loaner vehicle once. It didn't bother me in the slightest.

I have a 2013 Outback with the 2.5. Subaru's CVT is one of the better ones out there. Most of my driving is around town, but several times a year I take long-distance trips. Loaded up, wife, dog, bikes on the roof, the cars does fine. The transmission is pretty much bullet-proof. The belt is steel, it requires no service, no fluid level is check. There are paddle shifters, which is kind of weird. Remember you are selecting ratios, not specific gears. I think for 2015, Subaru made some minor improvements to the CVT, the new car has a little more sound deadening, so it should be quieter and slightly more efficient. M&D will be happy with their new ride.

No problems with the one on our 2012 Outback 2.5 after almost 65K miles. Doesn't bother me one bit. Suits that car just fine. Does what it's supposed to do very well. Cruises at very low RPM, and stays in the powerband when needed. Very efficient. You'd never guess driving the Outback that it only has 175 hp on tap.

I've played with the flappy paddle "shifters" a bit. It does an okay job impersonating a conventional planetary type transmission, but it's no manual. Shifts are pretty slow. Really not much practical purpose for them.

I have one in my Crosstrek. I've got about 26k on the vehicle now. I actually don't mind the CVT at all. It's quite smooth and about as good as an automatic transmission. The flappy paddles make the CVT rather engaging to drive

Subaru's CVT is MUCH better than Nissan's. Theirs is just awful. But I would have no issues with buying another Subaru with a CVT again.

Haven't driven the new Outback. Have driven the new Forester (CVT). My overall opinion is slightly to somewhat negative. The worst part is the way the engine surges on initial acceleration. Throttle response feels too abrupt; it's hard to get a smooth start. (Previous Subarus with geared automatics never had this problem.) Other than that, it's nice and smooth, and probably better for fuel economy. You hardly hear the engine in casual driving.
